Geographic location

Halifax, with a population of over 448,000, is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia.

Its maritime location, a deep indentation in the Atlantic coast, makes Halifax one of the world’s finest port facilities.

It’s also an ideal base for excursions along the Atlantic coast, from Peggy’s Cove to Lunenburg.

The old neighborhood of Historic Properties is located on the waterfront and bounded by Upper Water Street, Duke Street and Cogswell. The 18th-century wood and stone buildings are now home to boutiques and restaurants whose terraces spill out onto the quays.

Perched on a hill overlooking downtown, the Halifax Citadel offers a splendid view of the city. Its star-shaped building was used to defend the city against aggressors.

Established by royal proclamation in June 1750, a year after the founding of Halifax, the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market is the oldest farmers’ market in North America. Opposite the pretty promenade that has been laid out on the port, you can stroll along.

The Halifax waterfront is one of the city’s most popular destinations.

A wide variety of activities are also available outside the perimeter. A fifteen-minute to two-hour drive is all you need to immerse yourself in completely different environments and extraordinary natural settings. Visit the 206-year-old fishing village and lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove, go to Point Pleasant Park, the wooded municipal park on the southern tip of the Halifax Peninsula, and explore McNabs Island, ideal for hikers and cyclists who love quiet, coastal scenery.

Highlands National Park. One of the most enchanting places in Nova Scotia, where the mountains meet the sea. Discover 950 square kilometers of rugged wilderness, hike the famous Cabot Trail and admire the lush, wooded landscape of river canyons formed in an ancient plateau.
